The flight back to the Capitol Campus didn’t take long, and Lucifer had made sure she was warm with a spell that felt like a heated blanket. With all the noise from the wind, there was no real opportunity to talk.

The devil was fast. His wingspan was ridiculous, and his wings propelled them through the night sky with the same kind of speed she imagined a plane would. Five miles took barely more than a minute, and the second her feet were back on the ground, she let go of him.

Her legs felt wobbly, like she’d spent the last fifteen hours riding Demon through the countryside.

Thanks to her excellent nose, Jess was able to pick up the scent of the tiger shifter without too much issue, and Lucifer followed without a word, his wings disappearing like they’d never been there.

They found Samuel in the parking lot on his phone, eyeing her bike as if it would give him some hint of where she’d gone.

“You planning to tow that?” she asked, smirking when the tiger jumped.

Jess doubted that rarely ever happened to the shifter, but she’d made sure to stay downwind.

“Fuck me,” Samuel muttered, hanging up his phone. He eyed her from head to toe like he could figure out what happened just from that. “Are you okay? What the hell happened?”

Then the tiger caught sight of the devil.

It was clear he had no idea who he was, but the tiger took a step back. Lucifer never covered up his scent – which meant the tiger most definitely knew he wasn’t mortal.

“Can I have my necklace back?” she asked, holding her hand out. “It keeps the demons from finding out where I am.”

Samuel blinked, and then resettled his gaze on her. “I honestly thought ‘demon hunter’ was for the flashy, eye-catching website and business card.”

“It’s not, so can I have it back?”

The tiger sighed and looked away, slipping his hands in his pockets just like Lucifer did. “The Council has confiscated your personal affects, and I won’t be able to get them back to you until after you pass your hunter’s license. It’s not something they do all the time, but they want to punish you.”

“They?” Jess crossed her arms over her chest in annoyance. “Don’t you mean ‘we’?”

Samuel glanced at Lucifer behind her and then back at Jess. “It was put up to a vote. I lost.”

Well, fucking hell. What was she supposed to do now?

“Looks like you need a bodyguard,” Lucifer murmured. “Shall we just put that on your tab?”

The tiger’s eyes flickered into that glowing gold and this time he openly studied the devil. “And who, may I ask, is this?”

Jess would never admit how impressed she was by the tiger’s manners. It almost made her wonder if he’d been raised in the South, or maybe he had a strict grandparent who raised him right.

“This is my client, Lucifer Morningstar,” Jess told him, waving her hand at the devil. “He’s contracted me to keep the seals to hell closed.
